Join the M/THS Association
Contact the Association Headquarters
for membership information!
This page will be dedicated to Assocation. With their permission, we'll
post news and updates. Reunions, events, anything having to do with the
Association can be found here.
If you are not already a member, why not? The way most of us got in touch with each other was through the Association. So, please join if you can. It is the database work, mailings, and reunion planning by the Association that let's all of us enjoy each other's company. Heck, we are the only hometown many of us have!
Why "Madrid/Torrejón High School Association"? Because in the mid-'70s the school's name was changed from "Madrid High School" to "Torrejón High School. We know just how difficult it is to find people many years after they've all scattered to the winds. That's why we maintain a database of all the "madrileños y madrileñ as" we've found. We started in 1985 with about 125 people; the database is now closing in on 4,000.
Even if you don't become a dues-paying Association member, please make sure we have your correct name and class (or other MHS/THS connection) and that we always have your mailing address....we can tell you about future reunions and so your classmates and other friends can find you in our Directory. (Unless you request otherwise, the Directory will include your address and phones, regardless of who provides this information to us.)
ASSOCIATION
MEMBERSHIP
We try to keep in touch with all people who have been found, regardless
of whether they become dues-paying members of the Association. However,
those who do not pay dues do not hear from us as frequently, and do not
get the word on reunions and other events as soon as the dues-paying members
do.
We also have two publications for dues-paying members only: Our newsletter,
Knightlines, is published twice a year. Each issue is around 20 pages, and
features news of what our teachers, classmates and friends have been up
to. Members can also get our annual Directory. In its 125+ pages, the Directory
lists everybody in the database. In addition to the main alphabetical name-address-and-phone
listing, there are separate lists of those who are known to be deceased,
lists by class, and lists by state (or country) and city. The Directory
also has some tips on finding people.
You do not have to be a graduate of MHS/THS to join the Association. Everyone
in the following categories can get the membership benefits described above
by paying dues:
All former MHS and THS students, no matter when or how long they were in Madrid
Former faculty and staff
Interested parents, siblings and others with a special connection with MHS/THS
As explained in more detail below, we have other expenses in addition to
those covered by Association dues--- the major expense being that of keeping
in touch with those who don't pay dues so we can tell them about reunions
and other events. Whether or not you become a dues-paying member, we need
and appreciate all financial contributions to help defray these expenses.
YES,
WE DO HAVE REUNIONS...
And they' re nothing like a typical (we're tempted to say "boring")
Stateside high school reunion! Besides seeing your friends, it's also a
lot of fun to mingle with people from other "eras," comparing
notes on teachers (some of whom, it seems, were there forever!) and sharing
and recreating that wonderful experience we all had of living in Madrid.
We also support regional "mini-reunions" and other events in between
the big reunions. As long as we have your mailing address, we'll let you
know about reunions and other events...but, as noted above, dues-paying
members will usually get the word first.
HELP
US FIND OTHER PEOPLE FROM MHS/THS
About 12,000 people attended or taught at MHS/THS. We need your help in
finding as many of them as we can. Specifically:
It's easy to fall into the
trap of assuming that other people know what you know (and even vice versa).
Check your own address book, of course, but also check for any addresses
your parents or siblings may have of people from Madrid (you might be surprised!).
Unless you actually see someone 's name and correct address in the current
Directory, you should assume we do not have this information, and send it
to us as soon as possible. (If you're concerned that someone may not want
to be in the Directory, please tell us, and we won't include them until
we get their permission.)
Remember that we're not looking just for graduates of MHS and THS. We want
to find all students (including 7th and 8th graders from the years when
those grades were in the yearbook), faculty, administration and staff. We
will also include any parents, and any other "Amigos y Amigas de MHS/THS"
(such as older our younger siblings), who did not attend or teach at MHS
or THS, but who ask us to include them because they feel a special connection
to the high school.
Please do not just send people copies of this flyer, without sending their names and addresses to us. We know from experience that when this happens, too many of these people somehow won' t end up in the database, and won't get timely information about reunions and other events.
If you really want to get involved
in finding people:
Classes with coordinators seem to have more "found" people and
better turnout at reunions. Some classes don't have any coordinators; even
for the classes that do, another co-coordinator is always welcome. For more
information on becoming a coordinator, contact "Association HQ.
We have more potential leads to people than "Association HQ" and the coordinators have time to follow up on. If you'd like to help us follow up on any leads we may have to people in your class and/or area, contact "Association HQ" about joining the M/THSA Volunteer Network. (If you want to limit yourself to a specific area, or to a specific class or class range, please say so.)
ASSOCIATION
EXPENSES, DUES, AND FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS
Whether or not you become a dues-paying member, please consider making a
financial contribution
The Association is run...and reunions are produced...entirely by volunteers.
These volunteers are not compensated for their time, but we still have significant
expenses. Association dues (which are in line with those of other similar
overseas high school organizations) barely cover the cost of the Directories,
Knightlines, and other services we provide to dues-paying members. In addition
to these costs, we also incur expenses in finding people and in keeping
in touch with those who do not pay Association dues (we do this so we can
tell them about reunions and other events). These "database maintenance"
expenses are covered in part from reunion registration fees, but we also
need financial contributions to make up the difference (mainly so we can
have more than one non-member mailing a year, and to keep reunion fees lower
than they would otherwise be). We'd also like to be able to acquire, catalog
and preserve MHS/THS memorabilia, and financial contributions are the only
source of funds for this purpose.
Thus, we need your financial support, and we welcome contributions, regardless
of whether you also become a dues-paying member. All contributors of $10
or more will be acknowledged in the next issue of Knightlines. Those who
contribute $50 or more will have their "calling card" (business
card, personal card, or "Compliments of" notice) printed in the
next Directory. Those who contribute $100 or more will become members of
the "Order of the Silver Helmet" and will receive a special thank-you
gift (in addition to the "calling card" in the Directory).
